Male and female – two words that have been used to categorize individuals since the beginning of time. However, these words fail to encompass the full spectrum of human sexuality and gender identity. The binary system excludes individuals who identify as non-binary or genderfluid. Additionally, the use of gendered pronouns can lead to confusion and misgendering for those who do not fit into the traditional male/female categories.
There has been a push to use gender-neutral language to be more inclusive. This includes using \"they\" as a singular pronoun and using \"partner\" instead of boyfriend or girlfriend. While some may argue that this is unnecessary or confusing, it is important to acknowledge and respect individuals who do not fit into the gender binary.
The Race Divide
Black, white, Asian, Hispanic – these are just a few of the racial categories used to label people. These labels are often used to make assumptions about an individual's culture, upbringing, and behavior. However, race is a social construct that has been used to perpetuate racism and discrimination.
Using race as a way to categorize people also ignores the diversity within those groups. For example, there are vast differences between the cultures of someone who is African American and someone who is Nigerian. Additionally, individuals of mixed race are often forced to choose one label over the other, leading to feelings of exclusion and confusion about their identity.
The Class Divide
The labels of rich and poor can also have a divisive effect on society. People are often judged based on their income level or the community they come from. The privileged class may look down on those who are struggling financially, while the lower class may view the wealthy as arrogant and out of touch with reality.
This labeling can also be seen in the education system, where students are classified as gifted or remedial based on their academic abilities. This can have long-lasting effects on a student's self-esteem and career prospects.
It's time for us to realize the harm that unjust nouns can cause. Let's strive for a more inclusive and fair society where individuals are not defined by arbitrary labels. We are all unique and complex beings who deserve to be seen and respected as such.
