Shaky yet Confident: My Journey with English Speaking
Learning English has always been a challenging journey for me. As a non-native speaker, I have struggled with pronouncing certain words and phrases, understanding the vast vocabulary, as well as grasping the core grammar rules. Nevertheless, with persistence, lots of practice, and self-confidence, I have come a long way. Although my voice may still shake a little, my English-speaking skills have improved tremendously.
Stages of Learning
At the beginning of my English-learning journey, I was introduced to basic vocabulary and simple grammar rules. It was exciting to learn a whole new language, and I felt that I could conquer the world. However, as I progressed, I realized how challenging it was to master the language. I struggled with pronunciation and had a hard time understanding American accent, which is the main accent taught in my country.
The intermediate phase was even more daunting. The moment I thought I understood the language, I discovered a new level of complexity. I had to grapple with phrasal verbs, idioms, and numerous exceptions to the grammar rules. However, I worked relentlessly, listening to speeches, watching movies and TV shows, and practicing my speaking, reading, and writing skills. Slowly but surely, my confidence began to grow.
The advanced stage of learning was the most challenging yet rewarding. I was confident in expressing my opinions, using advanced vocabulary, and tackling complex grammar structures. I realized that learning English was not just about memorizing words and rules, but also about immersing oneself in the language and culture. I practiced public speaking, participated in debates and discussions, and communicated with native speakers. Each day, my voice became a little less shaky, and my English a little more confident.
Challenges and Overcoming Them
Despite my progress, there have been moments when I felt like giving up. The fear of making mistakes, being misunderstood, or sounding foolish in front of others was overwhelming. However, I learned that mistakes are part of the learning process. Every time I made a mistake, I learned from it and became a little better. I also realized that being confident while speaking was not just about being perfect, but also about being comfortable with oneself.
The lack of access to native speakers has also been a significant challenge. I live in a country where English is not the main language, and finding a native speaker was challenging. However, the internet has been a game-changer. I joined numerous language exchange and tutor platforms, and I met various native speakers from all over the world. I practiced my speaking, received feedback and advice, and improved my English tremendously.
The Benefits of Speaking English Confidently
Speaking English confidently has opened up many opportunities for me. I have been able to communicate with people from various countries and different backgrounds. Speaking English has also enabled me to pursue higher education in an English-speaking country and to apply for jobs that require bilingual skills. Moreover, I have learned about different cultures, traditions, and ways of thinking through books, movies, and conversations with native speakers.
Most importantly, speaking English confidently has given me a sense of accomplishment and self-worth. I feel that I can communicate effectively and express my ideas clearly. It has also given me the courage to explore new challenges and to take on new opportunities.
In conclusion, learning English has been a challenging but rewarding journey. My voice may still shake sometimes, but I am proud of my progress. The key to mastering a new language is persistence, practice, and self-confidence. With these traits, anyone can become a confident English speaker.
